Youth Villages YVLifeSet

An Effective Practice

Description

YVLifeSet, formerly known as Transitional Living, which is operated by the social services organization Youth Villages, is an independent living program for youth in need (e.g., transitioning from foster care or juvenile justice custody). The program lasts 9 months for most youth who successfully complete the program and involves intensive, individualized, and clinically focused case management, support, and counseling. At entrance, each person receives an assessment and individualized treatment plan. The bulk of the services are then provided during hour-long, weekly sessions with a case manager, who typically serves only eight youth at a time.

Results / Accomplishments

Since 1999, Youth Villages has helped more than 10,000 young people through YVLifeSet. In a randomized study, those participating in the LifeSet program were found ot have improved mental health (13%), increased employment (7%), increased earnings (17%), reduced homelessness (22%), reduced domestic and partner violence (30%), and reduced economic hardships (13%) as compared to the control group.

An Effective Practice meets the following HCI criteria:

  1. The program description includes at a minimum: the sponsoring organization, program goals, program implementation steps, and outcomes that have demonstrated program success and/or promise in achieving the program goal in one or more localities.
  2. The results from an evaluation of the program include quantitative measures of improvement in outcome of interest (i.e. increase in voter registration, not just delivery of voter registration drive) and/ or the outcome measure is increased or improved compared to the baseline measurement or the control group but the difference is not statistically significant.
