Bicycle-Involved Collision Rate

State: California
Measurement Period: 2023
This indicator shows the number of bicyclist-involved collisions resulting in bicyclist injury or death per 100,000 population.

Why is this important?

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, over 700 people die and over 500,000 people are treated in emergency departments as a result of bicycle-related injuries. Children are at an increased risk for bicycle-related injuries. Most deaths occur as a result of bicycle and motor vehicle crashes. Head injuries are the most serious type of injury and the most common cause of death for bicyclists. Bicycle helmets have been proven to reduce the risk of head and brain injury when a crash occurs by as much as 85 to 88 percent.
